About Em

Em is a place for young women to have a voice; to find ways to be stronger & more confident in managing stressful situations of all kinds;  to recognise sexual harm; and, to learn to support one another.

What does it all mean?

Being a young woman is often confusing, as we get sent mixed messages All. The. Time. This causes us trouble in a number of ways, but particularly, with regard to sexual experiences.

Scope of the problem

1 out of 3 girls may be sexually abused before she turns 16.
Most of this abuse (90%) will be done by someone she knows.

This is not okay.

So we’re doing something to help support our young women, through Em.

1 out of 3 girls may be sexually abused before she turns 16.

About 90% of this abuse will be done by someone she knows.

Women who seek counselling are better equipped to heal, and are less likely to suffer from physical and mental health issues.

Why Em?

The name Em is a reflection of “me” – because everyone should be able to see themselves and feel represented by what we do here at Dear Em.

Who's behind Em?

HELP

Dear Em was developed following youth research carried out by Point Research for HELP Auckland and Tu Wahine Trust.  This research showed that young girls did not know how and where to access support and help, and the need for accessible assistance online. We understand that at times it’s hard being a girl and we are passionate about empowering girls to support each other. In response to this HELP developed Dear Em.

HELP provides support for women harmed by sexual abuse. All counsellors working at HELP are women who are trained in dealing with sexual abuse and all its different forms.
